Maestro Hosts – The supergroup of the international jazz pianist Shay Maestro, in a special concert for the Liturgical Festival, with Bulgarian leading singer Nelly Andreeva and the cellist Mayo Shviru. Guest star: Nour Darwish

Saturday, December 16, 16:00, Salesian Church (Basilica of Jesus the Adolescent)

On December 16th in Nazareth, jazz pianist Shai Maestro, celebrated for his emotional depth and creative innovation, will lead a concert that stands as a harmonious confluence of diverse musical traditions.

He will be joined by three incredibly special guests: a classically educated cellist with a background in Middle Eastern music, a Bulgarian folk singer, and a classically trained soprano singer well-versed in Arabic music.

Mayu Shviro, steeped in classical education and deeply engaged with the music of Greece, Azerbaijan, and the Middle East, will blend her multidimensional expertise with the ensemble.

Her artistry will be complemented by the soulful voice of Neli Andreeva, who brings Eastern European folk elements into the mix. Completing the ensemble for a few special songs is soprano Nour Darweesh, whose classical training is enriched by a comprehensive understanding of Arabic musical heritage.

The performance promises to be an elevated fusion of these rich cultural influences, unified under the spiritual umbrella of liturgical music. This event serves as a tapestry of sound and a meeting of worlds, offering both a spiritual journey and a musically expansive experience.

Toronto, Ontario, Canada: Saturday, December 5, 2020 @ Royal Conservatory

The Liturgical Festival provides an opportunity for audiences from around the world to come to Nazareth and experience classical liturgical music in the city’s unique and festive Christmas atmosphere.

Polyphony’s inaugural Festival took place December 12 to 15 in Nazareth with performances from the Hannover Collegium Vocale Choir, the Galilee Chamber Orchestra, the Tel Aviv Collegium Singers, the Israeli Brass Quintet, and the Latin-American Folk Ensemble, as well as several leading Israeli soloists, in the city’s notable venues, including the Salesian Church, the Maronite Church, and the Industrial Park Auditorium.

The program included a performance of Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor, with 85 vocalists and instrumentalists on stage at the same time, Benjamin Britten’s popular Ceremony of Carols, and a special South American Christmas Holiday Concert featuring folklore compositions. Compositions by Bach, Brahms, Fauré, Purcell, Tallis and Elgar were also in the liturgical repertoire mix.

On Friday, December 20 at 7:30, 14 members from the Galilee Orchestra performed inEilabun, a small village about one-half hour north of Nazareth. Inspired by the Liturgical Festival, Eilabun’s Regional Council asked for a performance from Polyphony as part of their Christmas celebrations and to attract residents from surrounding towns. The ensemble presented Corelli’s “Christmas” Concerto Grosso in G Minor, Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Vivaldi’s Summer Concerto and The Holberg Suite by Edvard Grieg.

On Thursday, January 2, the same musicians performed at the Selisian Church in Nazareth for members of the Institute for Certified Public Accountants at their national conference.

This fall, the Polyphony Quartet gave a series of performances in the U.S. Violinists Yamen Saadi and Edi Kotlyar, violist Yoav Yatzkin, and cellist Mahdi Saadi performed western classical music and Jewish and Middle Eastern folk tunes. Following the music, Co-Founder and Director Nabeel Abboud Ashkar lead a question and answer session with the audience and musicians.
